Fremantle sits at the mouth of the Swan River about 19 kilometres south-west of the Perth CBD, and is distinct enough from Perth that locals treat it as its own city. Its centre holds one of the best-preserved nineteenth-century streetscapes in Australia — the West End is heritage-listed almost wholesale — alongside the Fremantle Markets, the Fremantle Prison World Heritage site, and the long run of pubs and cafes along South Terrace known as the Cappuccino Strip.
