Parramatta is Sydney's second CBD and the geographic centre of greater Sydney, 24km west of the harbour CBD. Once a colonial farming town, it has become NSW's most aggressively redeveloped suburb, with high-rise apartment towers, the Powerhouse Museum's new Parramatta site, and the future Sydney Metro West and Parramatta Light Rail networks all converging here. The cultural fabric is one of Sydney's most multicultural — large Indian, Chinese, Lebanese and South Sudanese communities anchor the food scene around Eat Street and Church Street, and the suburb's nightlife is more diverse and cheaper than the equivalents in the harbour CBD. Housing stock is dominated by post-2010 high-rise apartment buildings — most furnished rentals are in these — with older brick walk-ups in the surrounding streets and freestanding homes further out. Walk Score in the CBD core is very high. The T1 Western Line train runs to Sydney CBD in 24 minutes (express). The eastern Parramatta Light Rail to Carlingford opened in 2024. Parramatta River ferries are slow but scenic.
